Training for Urgent Care

This training is required or recommended by RNZCUC for the Urgent Care Standard 2015. Urgent care clinics who have a general practice must also complete Foundation training (and Cornerstone training if appropriate).

All staff

Compulsory:

  • Must be trained on Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights 1996

  • Current advanced cardiac life support certification

CPR providers can be selected by the practice. For example:

Cultural competence and cultural safety

 

All staff

Compulsory:

  • All staff should:
    • understand the concept of cultural safety.
    • be knowledgeable about the diverse groups in their population.
  • Practices to determine training that best fits their needs.

First aid

 

Reception staff

  • First aid
  • Identify and respond to patients with urgent medical conditions.

 

CPR providers can be selected by the practice. For example:

Health and Safety

 

All staff

  • All staff must be able to do their job safely.
  • Health and Safety at Work Act training
  • Can be in-house training

Done at induction for new staff

 

Managers and supervisors

  • May choose to complete Worksafe Representative training.
  • This is optional.

Elected health and safety representative

  • If the practice has an elected health and safety representative, that person must be trained.
  • Online training to achieve NZQA unit standard 29315.

Any staff member handling a hazardous substance.

  • Staff handling hazardous substances must know how to work with them safely.
  • Can be in-house training.

Infection Control:

  • Autoclave
  • Disinfecting

  • Clinical staff as appropriate
  • Team members must be trained in active infection control procedures.

  • Must be trained on the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • Practice can determine other training that best fits their needs.
