Day of Surgery

Policy

On the day of surgery, staff at GPDocs Model Practice prepare the theatre room in accordance with our infection prevention and control procedures:

Procedure for Surgery

  1. Check the patient in and check next of kin details are recorded.
  2. Assess whether the patient is fit for surgery.
  3. Ensure the procedure room is ready.
  4. Take patient to the procedure room and explain any risks or possible side-effects.
  5. Ask the patient to sign the appropriate consent form (if not already done). Scan into Medtech.
  6. When the procedure is complete, follow the process for the patient's post-surgery care.

    Discharge the patient when ready.

  7. If specimens have been collected, send to the laboratory for testing.
  8. Document the procedure in Medtech.

If tissue is removed during the procedure, follow the practice's policy for management of surgically removed tissue.
