Surgically Removed Tissue

Policy

We manage the removal, retention, return, and disposal of surgically removed tissue according to relevant legislation and best practice.

Patients have a right to have their tissue returned to them and we are guided by their wishes.

We manage requests in a way that is consistent with the patient's cultural/spiritual/religious values. We dispose of tissue not collected by the patient/whānau after 28 days.

Tissue specimens and swabs sent to the laboratory for diagnosis are not returned to patients/whānau.

GPDocs Model Practice does not use tissue for research.

Arranging for return of body tissue

If appropriate, ask about the patient/whānau's spiritual or cultural needs before the procedure. For example, the separation of tissue from the body is inconsistent with the Māori concept of waiora (health and wellbeing).

  1. If the patient/whānau has specific needs, discuss how the tissue will be handled, including:
    • collection.
    • storage.
    • options for disposal or return.
  2. Record the patient's wishes in Medtech.

See also Waste Management.

Tissue sent for testing will be retained by the laboratory for at least two weeks before collection is available. The laboratory will hold the specimen for up to three months for collection.

If patient has not collected the specimen within three months, it will be disposed of by the laboratory.
