In an earthquake

• Drop to your hands and knees.
• Cover your head and body, avoid taking cover near windows or objects that could fall.
• Hold on until the shaking stops.

When the shaking stops

• Consider potential hazards – turn off water, electricity, and gas if necessary.
• Check if anyone needs assistance.
• Follow the evacuation procedure if signalled or if the building shows signs of damage.

  Small earthquakes or aftershocks may not require evacuation.

• Assemble in one place and do a head count.

Be aware of the risk of aftershocks following a large earthquake. Do not re-enter a building that appears damaged, until it has been structurally checked.

Tsunami risk

If your workplace is in a tsunami evacuation zone and the earthquake is long or strong – get gone. Immediately after the shaking stops, move to the nearest high ground or as far inland as possible.
