Policy

GPDocs Model Practice has a wheelchair-accessible X-ray facility available open from 8 am – 8 pm every day, including public holidays.

We accept X-ray referrals from other general practitioners.

X-ray referrals

  1. Triage nurse assesses the patient and begins an ACC form, if appropriate.
  2. An appropriately-qualified clinician requests an X-ray via the Outbox form. This can be either:
    • NIXR-qualified triage nurse following guidelines
    • Clinician on duty after examining the patient.
  3. Patient reports to radiology reception and pays the X-ray surcharge.
  4. Patient placed in X-ray queue.
  5. After X-ray, patient waits in nurse area to see urgent care clinician.

Checking and reporting images

X-ray images are available to view soon after being performed.

  1. Urgent care clinician views the X-ray and records an interpretation in the patient's record in the PMS.
  2. If X-ray shows a fracture:
    • Arrange follow-up treatment at the fracture clinic if uncomplicated, or
    • Refer patient to the hospital.
  3. Radiologist completes an X-ray report within 72 hours and sends it electronically to the clinician.
  4. Send patient notes to the patient's regular clinician, unless the patient has requested otherwise.
